Let’s talk Dermaplaning..

A Controversial Take on Dermaplaning…

This may be unpopular perspective regarding dermaplaning, I wanted to share my idea behind why I’m not fully convinced about this treatment.

While many people rave about the immediate smoothness and glow that dermaplaning can provide, there are some who caution against its frequent use including me.

Some argue that regularly removing the fine vellus hair and exfoliating the top layer of skin can lead to increased sensitivity and potential irritation over time. They suggest that for those with particularly sensitive skin types, or conditions such as rosacea or eczema, dermaplaning might exacerbate these issues rather than improve them.

Which myself has seen with a few clients that have attended the salon and been elsewhere for the treatment previously their skin has become more sensitive over time with one lady mentioning that her homecare products now sting when she applies them. No product should be stinging your skin to the fact it feels like a burning sensation, this shows that your skin barrier is damaged and sensitive.

While the results can be impressive, they are often short-lived, necessitating ongoing treatments to maintain the desired effect. This can be both costly and time-consuming, leading some to question whether the benefits truly outweigh the downsides for everyone. Sometimes we can become fixated on having something removed when it’s not actually necessary and has become somewhat a trend to have done.

Ultimately, it’s important for individuals to weigh the pros and cons, considering their own skin type and concerns, and perhaps consult with my self to determine if dermaplaning is the right choice for their skincare routine. Even if I don’t offer the treatment I am always happy to do a consultation with you to see whether we can achieve the result your after with alternative treatments such as waxing, gentle peels in those areas or point you in the right direction of a specialist therapist in the area who does provide that treatment.

For those who decide to try dermaplaning, it's crucial to ensure that the procedure is performed by a trained professional who understands the nuances of different skin types. Proper technique and aftercare can make a significant difference in minimizing any potential risks. Additionally, exploring alternative exfoliation methods, such as chemical exfoliants or gentle scrubs, might offer similar benefits without the same level of commitment or risk of irritation.

In the end, skincare is a deeply personal journey, and what works wonders for one person may not be suitable for another. It's all about finding the right balance and approach that complements individual needs and preferences. Whether choosing dermaplaning or another method, the key is to prioritize healthy, happy skin above all else, treating it with the care and attention it deserves.

If you are ever unsure of what treatment you need, simply book a consultation where we will discuss your desired outcomes and results and with that I can develop a bespoke plan for you within the salon.

Don’t forget you can always reach out to me.
